Dear You!Casa da Horta is a non-profit cultural and environmental association, located in Porto’s old town.
We emerged from the need to create alternative cultural programs and lifestyles in the city of Porto, contributing to the development of critical thinking and at the same time putting into practice alternatives to unethical consumerism. During these 15 years of existence we have been doing our best to contribute to broadening the perspectives on human and animal rights; promoting ethical consumerism, collectivism, solidarity |
actions; bringing awareness to different ecological and social issues; supporting local (first) and international (second) artists, craftsmen and small producers and projects; and promoting cultural exchange, re/upcycling and money-free exchange etc.
All this is based on a non-hierarchical and horizontal structure.
Since the beginning, we have collaborated and supported other projects and organisations who share the same principles. From national environmental groups and NGOs working for ecological and animal rights causes, to locally-based activist groups, who question and fight city touristification; from associations and social centres who work with and for the local community, to collaboration with an urban garden association.
We want to be a space for exchanging and sharing ideas, experiences, knowledge and activities, open for everybody. We would like to engage intellectual self-defence and creative resistance, easing the access to critical thinking, hard-to-find information and literature for everybody.

Our space in RibeiraThe home to our ideas is a beige-green 'cave' by the riverside in the Ribeira of Porto. Feel very invited to pass by to give us high five, participate in activities or join us by the table.
To check our current projects/ activities, go to the event calendar on the main page, to our FB or Instagram. Here we also have a small eco shop, where you can find (mostly) locally made, fair trade products e.g. books, coffee, honey, perfumes, newspapers, CDs, DVDs, clothes and handcrafts. |
Our free shop is a space where you can bring things that you don't need anymore (but you think somebody else might like them :) ), or to take what others didn’t need.
We also have a little library with books, zines and a newspaper collection that specialises in radical politics, environmentalism, different ways of living, community building, gender politics, alternative/ counter culture, activism, animal-free cooking, solidarity etc. If you're interested in donating us books please contact us. Ones of the activist/critical approach are particularly welcome. You can also grab a musical instrument, check out our constantly growing collection of board games or spend some time with residing crayons! |
Veggie food place! We have a kitchen where there are no chefs, or waiters. We prepare vegan dishes as a response to the exploitation of animals, humans and the environment in food production around the world.
We have local, slowly fermented bread from the Trigo do Umbigo bread people. Our fermented drinks are made by very nice home producers. And! Our coffee is from Zapatistas! Normally we are open Tuesday-Saturday. Feel very invited to come for dinner 19.30 - 21:30. Saturdays are dedicated to special menus (various cuisines from around the world and other themes, prepared by us or our friends). You can also participate in proposing the Saturday menu and cook with us! |
