[EN] "Home" has always been a very strange concept for me. I've lost count of the times I've moved and the number of people I've lived with. I've lived with my family, with friends, with people I didn't know... and almost all of these people are now my home too. I think I have lived in almost 20 very different spaces among them: houses with a patio, houses with a garden, houses in which I shared a room, duplexes, apartments on the 1st floor, 2nd floor and 3rd floor, I even lived in a tent for a few months. Houses in different countries and continents, in cities, in towns and in the countryside, each one unique and special in its own way. I remember the first time I set foot in Portugal I thought: "I feel at home". Almost 9 years have passed since that thought, but it hasn't changed. I was doing Erasmus in Coimbra and during that period, I did not stop having incredible experiences. One of the most important ones happened in the most unexpected way. In one of my visits to Porto I discovered Casa da Horta walking along the Ribeira with a friend. I also remember feeling at home when I first arrived. We sat down to eat and while we were chatting, a very nice guy named Matteo started telling us about the project he was doing and how much fun he was having both in Porto and in this association. It was the first time I heard about the European Voluntary Service. The truth is that it planted a little seed that ended up germinating some time later. Today I am writing this after having lived in Porto for a year. A year of life in Casa da Horta. A year full of adventures, emotions, thoughts, learning, experiences and people that I now also consider home. A year that has been very long because it has been full of incredible moments and, obviously, there have also been moments a little more uncomfortable or difficult to carry. A very short year because, although I have done thousands of things, now that I have left I know I want to come back soon. It has been a year in which I have met the nicest people in the world gathered in such a special place as the association that accepted me as a volunteer. A year full of people from everywhere, with different contexts and stories, each of these people has helped me grow and understand that the important thing about each place is the people who form it. It has been a year in which I have been able to be freer, to know myself better and to understand who I am and who I want to be. I arrived at Casa da Horta deciding that I wanted to put my heart into everything I did, so I left a little piece of my heart there. If I have to comment on more practical aspects I will mention that throughout this experience, I have collaboratively organized workshops, talks, meetings, teambuildings, internal and external activities... I have painted and drawn, I have written, I have researched, I have taken pictures, I have danced, I have made collages, I have decorated, we have traveled... and, of course, I have enjoyed like never before, I have eaten delicious food, I have danced until I couldn't dance anymore, I have laughed and I have cried a lot. Above all, I have cried with happiness and gratitude. I leave Casa da Horta with a heart full of gratitude for having been able to live a unique experience like this. I hope that, if you ever consider volunteering, you who are reading this, do not hesitate to follow this wish. I hope you can build and feel a home in every place you visit. I am sure that Casa da Horta can also be your home. I give you a song that also feels like home to me and some photographies that I took in my last days there. In one of them you will read: "The value of things is not in the time they last, but in the intensity in which they happen". Casa no Campo

Hey there! I’m Sebastian. I’m from Wrocław, Poland. Here’s a short story about my ESC in Casa da Horta. Since I was a kid, I’ve always been keen on discovering and exploring the unknown. During high school, I learned about Erasmus+. After participating in plenty of youth exchanges, training courses, I decided to get some bigger experience. i got crazy-lucky - after maybe a month of searching for an opportunity, I found or it’s better to say, that they found me. Yes, Casa da Horta contacted me first, so I was the chosen one! After an interview, I already knew, that I would like to become a part of the association, I only had to wait for the positive answer. After paperwork, finding my place to live and some online training, my adventure was about to begin. I was thrilled! With excitement came fear as well. For the first time I was going abroad for such a long time - almost one year. At this moment I should mention, that I am a visually impaired person, so all of these travels were challenges for me. This one was the biggest. The most valuable. When I arrived in Porto, I was under the great impression of its charm. I felt great vibes on the first day. Slowly I was starting to feel more and more comfortable. I knew, I could always count on help from my new friends from Casa da Horta. During this project, I’ve met many crazy people and we did a lot of amazing things together! After a few months I even started helping in our lovely vegan restaurant. I guess Casa da Horta was the only place where you could order drinks from blind bartender! I also worked with social media - some of CDH’s publications were the ones I was responsible for. The cherry on this cake was our pub quiz. I was lucky and privileged to become a new host and continue this activity. All together we’ve been working on it and we managed to develop it to the greatest pub quiz in the Universe! (or at least in Porto) I think, there was no time for boredom - there was always something going on. In my free time I was travelling a lot, exploring some lovely places in Portugal or just chatting with my friends in our favorite places in Porto. ESC in Casa da Horta was my life experience. Going there was one of my best decisions. I found a place where I can feel free. I found friends, great ones! I learned something more about myself. I learned how to enjoy life. |
